Eckerö Line is renewing

Eckerö Line’s ships have been modernised this winter and spring. One of the most significant changes is the battery system on MS Finlandia, making MS Finlandia the first hybrid ship on the Gulf of Finland. We have named our battery solution Konttinen. 

In early 2026 Eckerö Line invested in a battery solution for MS Finlandia to reduce carbon dioxide emission. As a result, MS Finlandia is the first passenger ship on the Gulf of Finland that runs partly on electricity and partly on fuel, i.e. a hybrid ship. This is a major investment in more sustainable shipping. The battery solution is installed in a fireproof sea container on deck 9. The container will hold 96 battery modules. 

The battery system replaces one of MS Finlandias four diesel generators. The targeted fuel reduction is about 3 %, which is 500–600 tons less fuel per year in the future. At the same time our greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.

The battery system is used continuously – battery power is utilised during the voyage, when steering the ship, and in ports.

The batteries are charged with green shore power in both Helsinki and Tallinn ports. This is just the beginning of our journey and the first step towards fully electric shipping. It is also the Eckerö Group’s long-term goal.

On MS Finlandia, passenger areas have been significantly expanded, and restaurant services have been renewed to become even more diverse and inviting. Some of the renovations were carried out during the docking in January 2026, and the work has continued partly even after the ship was back in service.

The serving lines in Buffet Eckerö are completely renewed. Thanks to the new layout, there are more serving lines, allowing guests to gather their food faster without long queueing times. Being able to take smaller portions and return for more as needed makes dining more relaxed and helps reduce food waste. Customers’ wishes are also reflected Buffet Eckerö menus, without forgetting familiar onboard favorites.

The seating capacity at Bistro & Cafe Satama has been increased by roughly 150 seats, thanks to the expansion of the restaurant’s upper floor (deck 9). The enlargement makes it easier to find a place to dine or have coffee, even on busy departures. 

On MS Finbo Cargo, the general passenger areas have been renovated during docking. They have become more modern and spacious. To better meet customer needs, the Info desk’s kiosk is relocated. The new info point, shop and bar are closer together, allowing better, more extended opening hours. The areas on deck 7 are more open and comfortable, also giving dining passengers more freedom to choose their seating.

In August, 120 solar panels were installed on MS Finbo Cargo. They are estimated to generate approximately 70 MWh of clean energy annually. Our goal is to save around 15 tonnes of fuel per year.

The system has been designed with the possibility of increasing its capacity in the future. The installation of the solar panels is part of our ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce our environmental impact.
