Eckerö Line is renewing
Eckerö Line’s ships are being modernised this winter, and all the improvements will be available to us in the spring. One of the most significant changes is the battery system that will be installed on MS Finlandia, making MS Finlandia the first hybrid ship on the Gulf of Finland. We have named our battery solution Konttinen.
Teemme matkustuksesta ja asioinnista laivalla entistäkin mukavampaa ja sujuvampaa. Uudistuksissa olemme kuunnelleet asiakkaiden toiveita. Lisäksi otamme merkittävän askeleen kohti meriliikenteen sähköistymistä, kun m/s Finlandialle asennetaan hiilidioksidipäästöjä vähentävä akkuratkaisu. Sen myötä aluksesta tulee Suomenlahden ensimmäinen osittain sähköllä kulkeva matkustajalaiva.
MS Finlandia will be a hybrid ship
This spring, Eckerö Line is investing in a battery solution for MS Finlandia to reduce carbon dioxide emission. As a result, MS Finlandia will be the first passenger ship on the Gulf of Finland that runs partly on electricity and partly on fuel, i.e. a hybrid ship. This is a major investment in more sustainable shipping. The battery solution is installed in a fireproof sea container on deck 9. The container will hold 96 battery modules. The installation work is extensive and has already begun.
The battery system replaces one of MS Finlandias four diesel generators. The targeted fuel reduction is about 3%, which is 500–600 tons less fuel per year in the future. At the same time our greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.
The battery system is used continuously – battery power is utilised during the voyage, when steering the ship, and in ports.
The batteries are charged with green shore power in both Helsinki and Tallinn ports. This is just the beginning of our journey and the first step towards fully electric shipping. It is also the Eckerö Group’s long-term goal.
5 FACTS ABOUT KONTTINEN:
- The battery pack can store approximately 1.4 MWh of energy
- The maximum power is 1.5 MW
- Charging takes about 30-45 minutes
- Charging is done at a maximum power of 1.5 MW
- The battery system was acquired from Wärtsilä
Other improvements on MS Finlandia
On MS Finlandia, passenger areas will be significantly expanded, and restaurant services will be renewed to become even more diverse and inviting. Some of the renovations will be carried out during the docking period from January 6 to January 23, 2026, and the work will partly continue even after the ship is back in service.
Buffet Eckerö
The serving lines in Buffet Eckerö will be completely renewed. Thanks to the new layout, there will be more serving lines, allowing guests to gather their food faster without long queueing times. Being able to take smaller portions and return for more as needed makes dining more relaxed and helps reduce food waste. Customers’ wishes will also be reflected in the future Buffet Eckerö menus, without forgetting familiar onboard favorites.
Bistro & Cafe Satama
The seating capacity at Bistro & Café Satama will increase by roughly 150 seats, thanks to the expansion of the restaurant’s upper floor (deck 9). The enlargement will make it easier to find a place to dine or have coffee, even on busy departures.
Horizon Seats
By Easter 2026, a completely new seating area called Horizon Seats will open on deck 9 of MS Finlandia. From its 150 seats, passengers can reserve a paid seat with sea views. The calm environment is also suitable for working. The seats will have USB charging outlets, and the area will feature snack and coffee vending machines.
In addition, the Horizon Seats area offers faster Wi-Fi throughout the entire voyage, ensuring that working in a calm environment is easier. The peaceful atmosphere is also well-suited for relaxation or focused work. The seats are equipped with USB charging ports, and the area also features a snack and coffee vending machine. Pricing details will be confirmed closer to the opening date, but the cost is expected to be around 10 euros.

MS Finbo Cargo is renovated
On MS Finbo Cargo, the general passenger areas have been renovated during dry dock from December 23, 2025, to January 6, 2026. They become more modern and spacious. To better meet customer needs, the Info desk’s kiosk is relocated. The new info point, shop and bar are closer together, allowing better, more extended opening hours. The areas on deck 7 are more open and comfortable, also giving dining passengers more freedom to choose their seating.
