Eckerö Line expands its cargo services at Vuosaari Harbour

New truck ramp enables an addition of shifts on the Helsinki-Tallinn route

The new truck ramp at Vuosaari Harbour has been completed. Built by the Port of Helsinki, the new ramp enables Eckerö Line to add one shift per day from Vuosaari to Muuga, Tallinn and back with Finbo Cargo. Eckerö Line now operates as many as 12 departures per day on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. Over 60 % of the cargo transported by the company now goes through the Vuosaari Harbour.

Eckerö Line’s cargo services have grown steadily over the past few years. The company’s market share has strengthened, and Eckerö Line is now the second largest shipping company on the Helsinki-Tallinn route, which is essential also in terms of Finland’s security of supply.

’’I’m glad that we as a shipping company can bear our responsibility for traffic functionality around Helsinki city center and on our part guide the growth of truck traffic from the city center to Vuosaari. Eckerö Line is the only shipping company that takes over 60% of its truck traffic and a part of its passenger car traffic away from downtown Helsinki and its traffic jams. Both the Vuosaari and Muuga Harbours are easy to reach and from both it is possible to flexibly proceed to the highway. The completing of the new truck ramp also makes it possible to strengthen the position of Eckerö Group in the Helsinki-Tallinn market’’, says Taru Keronen, Managing Director at Eckerö Line.

More options for cargo customers

Eckerö Line has a versatile selection of services for industrial transportation. It is also the only shipping company on the Helsinki-Tallinn route of which vessels can deliver dangerous goods. The new ramp at Vuosaari Harbour is important to Eckerö Line in many ways – amongst other things, it creates cost-efficiency when a vessel’s accelerated turning speed enables an addition of shifts.

’’The ramp allows more frequent departure times to and from Vuosaari, which gives our cargo customers more options to choose from. For shipping companies, efficiency is everything, and trucks should carry cargo with the highest operating efficiency possible. Now that the Vuosaari renovations have been completed it’s no longer necessary for a customer to use Länsisatama, located in the immediate proximity of Helsinki city center, for the sake of more flexible schedules. It’s also important to notice that Vuosaari has been specifically designed as a cargo harbour and its infrastructure supports truck traffic even better than Länsisatama’’, says Tomas Sjödahl, Cargo Director at Eckerö Line.

Eckerö Line’s cargo vessel m/s Finbo Cargo runs from Vuosaari, Helsinki to Muuga, Tallinn. In addition to its cargo services, the vessel also offers car passengers a peaceful and traffic-jam-avoiding option to crossing the Gulf of Finland.
